Fiesta
The 2006 Sarok Festival Celebration is the main event that marked the 86th Founding Anniversary of the Municipality of Consolacion, which we celebrated last February 14, 2006.
The grand preparation and the expenses that was worth its resounding success truly make the 2006 Sarok Festival Celebration, a celebration sui generis, for it is in deed a festival that is once of a kind in Consolacion. The Sarok Festival celebration started during the incumbency of the late Mayor Max Malagar, when the then councilor, now Honorable Mayor, Avelino J. Gungob, Sr. sponsored for the passage of a resolution during the year 1995, which resolution mandated, that henceforth, in commemoration to the early settler’s livelihood occupation, which is the Sarok Weaving activity, the Founding Anniversary of the Municipality of Consolacion shall be celebrated and shall be called the Sarok Festival Celebration, thus, in 1996, the first Sarok Festival was celebrated. After ten (10) years of continued commemoration, the 2006 Sarok Festival Celebration has proven its worth preserving the cultural heritage and reminiscing the historical background of our people in Consolacion, more especially, that the impact of the Founding Anniversary Celebration corresponds to the economic and cultural activity of our people when our town has its own humble beginning when its was founded and considered as a Municipality. True to his personal and genuine dedication and preserve our very own cultural and our people’s historical background, Honorable Mayor Avelino J. Gungob, Sr., with the able assistance of his daughter, Hon. Analee Gungob, who is the Barangay Captain of Barangay Casili, Consolacion, Cebu, has launched a program and activities which lead to a more colorful and festive atmosphere of the 2006 Sarok Festival Celebration. The 2006 Sarok Festival started with a Street Parade by all Municipal and Barangay Officials and Employees and a Street Dancing by the Sarok Contingents and Guest Participants at 2:00 o’clock in the afternoon, and then, the Contest Proper immediately followed at the Sta. Lucia Commercial Complex Grounds. It was participated in by six (6) elementary and six (6) high school contingents. The Honorable Agnes A. Magpale, attended the affair and delivered the inspirational message in behalf of Governor Gwen F. Garcia, who failed to attend the festival due to prior commitments. In her speech, Honorable Magpale, offered her own line of defense to the criticism raised by some quarters which proposed for the shelving of the Sarok Festival, as according to Honorable Magpale, the economic gains or financial returns may not be immediately felt or immediately forthcoming, but what matters most is the preservation of our cultural heritage and the historical background of our people, and that the personal discipline and cooperation that our students have shown to their instructors and choreographers is more than enough to compensate for whatever expenses that goes with every celebration, more so, in commemorating this worthwhile annual festival. The Honorable Agnes Magpale also made her own personal observation that the Sarok Festival of Consolacion is a festival to reckon with and is comparable with some other colorful and successful festival which she personally attended in the entire province of Cebu and elsewhere. The Festival was made more colorful with the special and beautiful performances of the Mantawi Festival Dance Group of Mandaue City and the Bakasi Contingent of the Municipality of Cordova, which seals the success of the entire affair. The Grand Prize Winner of the elementary category was won by Tugbongan Elementary School Contingents, and the Grand Prize Winner of the High School Category was won by the Cabangahan National High School Contingent The 2006 Sarok Festival has also produced our own local talents who participated in the yearlong search for the winners of the Tingog sa Consolacion, Idol Lacion, Dansolacion weekly contests. The five finalists of the monthly winners have shown their best to prove to all Consolacion and Cebuanos as well, that they are winners and shining stars of their own right. The Sarok Festival ended with a Big Bang with the colorful and magical display of the beautiful fireworks which truly marks the real success of the entire affair.
